Blue Dragonfly Microphone Review

blue dragonfly microphones review Aug 04, 2019

The Blue Dragonfly Microphone is one of the top studio condenser microphones in the Blue model line. Like many other condenser microphones, this one is perfect for instruments that emit higher frequencies, AKA the voice. In terms of tonality, it delivers a bright and crisp sound that is great for studio-standard pop vocals. If we had to compare it to any other microphones, we’d say that it is a cross between the Neumann U47 and the AKG C12.

Unlike those microphones, this one captures lows a bit better too, helping to add the necessary warmth to keep your vocals from sounding too harsh. It utilizes a cardioid pickup pattern, which is very common in vocal microphones, and runs off of +48v Phantom Power.

Design

The Blue Dragonfly comes with a rotating head that allows you to find the perfect placement with total ease. If you are looking to record instruments beyond your voice, such as acoustic guitar, this feature can be incredibly helpful. It comes complete with a classy, wooden storage box for when it isn’t in use, as well as a handy shock-mount that gets rid of unwarranted vibrations. In terms of aesthetic, this microphone has a very unique look with the long, rectangular body and bulb-like grille. It’ll give your studio a wonderfully classic vibe.

Sensitivity

This microphone can be pretty sensitive, so you have to make sure to position it perfectly to get the desired sound. It is very susceptible to proximity effect.

If you move around a lot when you sing, this may be a bit of an issue.

Final Verdict

The Dragonfly is an excellent microphone at a price that won’t break the bank. While it does not have as flat of a frequency response as the company claims it has, it is a strong contender for one of the best vocal value microphones thanks to the airy brightness. It is also perfect for recording other high-frequency instruments as well, such as cymbals, strings, and acoustic guitar. If you have a very dark voice, this will work in a complementary fashion, helping to add that lost air.
