Additional Vocal Health Tips To Maintain a Strong Voice
When most singers begin their careers, they fall victim to many vocal issues that end up haunting them throughout their careers.
Here at TVS, we believe that it is important to understand these things now so that you can be an active singer for many years to come. Here are a few of the main considerations every singer or vocal athlete should take into account so that they can retain the best vocal health throughout their careers.
1. Stay Rested
If your body is tired, your voice will be tired. If your voice has not had the proper rest, it will be more susceptible to injury. You won’t have as much control over your technique if you are tired. That reduction of control will eventually end up becoming a bad habit.
Make sure to get enough sleep so that you can allow the voice some time to rest and recoup. If you don’t have the proper rest, your immune system won’t be as strong and your body will have less of an ability to fight off harmful bacteria and infections.
Sing with a tired voice and you won’t be at your best. This could cost you your next important gig or singing contract. Say no to going out once in a while and make sure you’re getting the rest you need!
2. Don’t Rely On Magic Singing Elixirs
There are hundreds of different vocal remedies out there. They come in tea forms, lozenge forms, and much more. While they may be able to help you if you are losing your voice or are feeling a bit croaky that day, they won’t be able to solve long-term problems that exist because of improper technique. Unfortunately, many of these elixirs don’t even perform in the way that they claim, consequently costing you wasted money.
Many of these ingested products never even hit the larynx or vocal folds, as the epiglottis stops them in their tracks and pushed them down into the stomach to be absorbed. What you truly feel when you ingest these elixirs is a sense of remedy in the oral and nasal cavities, which can give you the “feeling” of healing. Don’t seek out these products for long-term relief. Instead, work on your technique so that you don’t feel hoarse as often.
With that said, if you are seeking out a legitimate, short-term solution to that cranky, groggy voice, check out our all-natural vocal inhaler!
3. Try Out Manual Therapy
Laryngeal Therapy is one of the most under-used tools in the world of singing, though can be one of the most beneficial. If you are someone who can’t seem to manage their time well, or you constantly find yourself overusing your voice, manual therapy might be great for you!
This kind of therapy provides a hands-on approach so that you can feel changes instantaneously! Your muscles will feel lighter and symptoms caused by fatigue or stress will vanish. If you have the option to, we would highly recommend making it a part of your vocal routine!
4. Never Neglect Your Warm-Up!
People neglect their warm-ups for many reasons, though commonly it is because they feel that they don’t have enough time or they don’t have the focus and know-how. People often skip straight to vocal exercises, effectively “performing” in the process and over-working their voices.
Many people get self-conscious when it comes to warming up, especially when at a venue or before a session. It’s a strange concept considering the fact that a guitarist will noodle and do scales before a show and trumpet players will get their lips ready by doing scales, yet singers are embarrassed to warm up?
Warm-ups don’t need to be daunting or time-consuming. Ten to fifteen minutes is more than enough time to warm up before a show or recording session! Any more than that and you are heading into “exercise” territory. If you want to learn more about warm-ups, check out The Four Pillars of Singing.
